Visa-exempt nationalities and the JESTA timeline

Detailed information on JESTA and visa-exempt nationalities

Japan has reciprocal visa-exemption agreements with 74 countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, all EU/EEA member states, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Israel, the UAE, and many others. Citizens of these countries enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days (15 days for Indonesia and Thailand; 30 days for Brunei and Qatar) and are not served by this product. Japan plans to introduce JESTA (Japan Electronic System for Travel Authorisation) for visa-exempt nationals during fiscal 2028; we will add the JESTA product when it launches. Frequently Asked Questions

Japan's eVisa is uniquely residency-based, not nationality-based. To be eligible you must (1) be an ordinary passport holder (not diplomatic or official), (2) currently reside in one of nine specific countries - Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, or the United States, and (3) hold a passport that requires a visa for Japan (the 74 visa-exempt countries cannot use the eVisa - they enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days). In practice, this means the eVisa is most relevant for visa-required nationals such as Indians, Chinese, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Vietnamese, Filipinos, Nigerians, Egyptians, Russians, Sri Lankans, and Nepalis who are studying, working, or otherwise residing in one of the nine eligible host countries. Without residency in one of those nine, the only path is a paper visa application at the Japanese embassy or consulate in your home country.
